Kelvin Gastelum Says 'The End Is Coming' and One Fight Now Decides His UFC Future

The former interim middleweight title challenger has one bout left on his deal, and he says the UFC wants to re-sign him only if he wins it.

Kelvin Gastelum is down to his last fight on his UFC contract, and he says the promotion’s interest in keeping him comes with a condition: win.

“I have one fight left on my contract, man,” Gastelum said in a recent interview, as reported by MMA Mania. “I gotta win this fight. They want to renew my contract.”

So the door is open, at least by his telling. He has to walk through it with his hand raised.

The 35-year-old also made it clear that a new deal wouldn’t mean a long second act. He said that once he re-signs and finishes out that contract, he plans to walk away. “I think after I renew and I complete that contract, I’m going to ride off into my own sunset,” he said. “I got a few good ones left in the chamber, but I know the end is coming soon.”

He isn’t conceding anything about his level, though. “I still believe I’m one of the best fighters in the world, and I know I can compete with the best of them,” Gastelum said, adding that he has plenty of competitive fire left and simply hasn’t been able to put it on display. “The last few years have not gone the way I wanted them to.”

The recent record

That last line is the understatement of the interview. Gastelum has alternated wins and losses across six straight appearances going back to 2023, which is a tough pattern to sell at a negotiating table.

His most recent outing was a first-round submission loss to Vicente Luque at UFC 327.

Before that, he beat Dustin Stoltzfus at middleweight at Noche UFC in San Antonio on September 13, 2025. The win came with baggage. Gastelum weighed in at 191 pounds, five over the 185-pound limit, and forfeited 35 percent of his purse.

The scale has been a recurring problem. A year before the Stoltzfus fight, his welterweight bout with Daniel Rodriguez got moved up to middleweight at the last minute after Gastelum showed up in Saudi Arabia unable to make 170. Dana White publicly called it “extremely disappointing.”

Gastelum was also booked against Yousri Belgaroui at a Noche UFC card in September but withdrew with an undisclosed injury.

What’s next

No opponent or date has been announced for his final contracted fight. That’s the whole story right now: a former title challenger, a contract with one bout left on it, and a blank space where a name should be.

I’ll give Gastelum this much. Ask a veteran on a skid about his future and you usually get a paragraph of fog about taking things one fight at a time. He told you he’s got one fight left, he has to win it, and he’s leaving soon after either way. That’s a guy answering the question. The problem is the part he didn’t talk about. The UFC can live with a 1-1 rhythm from a fan favorite, but a matchmaker can’t build around a middleweight who arrives five pounds heavy, and that 191 on the scale in San Antonio is probably weighing on this negotiation more than the Luque loss. Make 185 on the nose, win the fight, and the sunset ride he’s planning gets to happen on his own terms.
