Canelo vs. Mbilli Fight Week Kicks Off in Riyadh as Pressure Mounts to Move It

Top Rank fired the starting gun Monday, but with Houthi strikes hitting Saudi targets, Turki Alalshikh is insisting the October 31 fight goes ahead as planned.

Fight week is officially on in Riyadh. Top Rank Boxing announced it Monday on X with a post that opened with “IT’S FIGHT WEEK IN RIYADH.” and told Christian Mbilli it was “Time to show the world,” tagging DAZN Boxing and locking in October 31 for Canelo Alvarez vs. Mbilli. The super middleweight fight lands on Halloween night, fighters on the card have started arriving, and the final promotional push is underway.

That’s the fun part. The less fun part is everything happening around Riyadh.

MMA Mania reported Sunday that pressure is growing for the Canelo fight to be rescheduled because of the escalating war in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia’s Future Investment Initiative, the business conference nicknamed “Davos in the Desert,” has already been pushed to next year. According to that report, Houthis keep hitting sites in Saudi Arabia with missiles, bombs and drone strikes, and King Khalid International Airport has been struck multiple times after the Houthi military labeled it a legitimate target. MMA Mania also cited reports from major news organizations that the Trump administration is preparing to escalate its war with Iran after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3. Iran has attacked both Saudi Arabia and Qatar in the past over their support of the U.S.

Turki Alalshikh isn’t budging. The Saudi boxing power broker has said Alvarez fears nothing and that the fight will go ahead as planned.

He has company. Dana White, speaking after UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi over the weekend, was asked what he’d tell other sports leagues weighing events in the region. “Listen, I can’t tell other sporting events what to do,” White said. “That’s their business. We go. We go. When we have a deal, we have a contract, we have a date, we’ll be there.” He added that he has never felt he or his staff were unsafe in the Middle East. TKO’s calendar backs that up: WWE Crown Jewel in Riyadh on November 7, UFC Qatar on November 21 and UFC Saudi Arabia on December 5, all still moving forward per White.

The Riyadh money machine and Canelo already have history. Alalshikh and White sat cageside together at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on September 13, 2025, for Canelo vs. Terence Crawford, the card where Fernando Vargas Jr. co-headlined against Callum Walsh. That was a stadium spectacle built for maximum noise. This one is a road trip into a city where an airport keeps getting hit.

My quick take: look at who Top Rank built the fight week post around. It wasn’t the face on every Mexican Independence Day poster for a decade. It was Mbilli, getting the crown emoji and the “show the world” line, which tells you exactly how the promotion is selling this. He’s the guy whose life changes on Halloween, and Canelo is the house he has to rob. I love that angle. I’d love it more if the biggest threat this week were only a Canelo left hook to the body. If the strikes keep coming, “Canelo fears nothing” is a line Alalshikh will have to defend all week, and the countdown to the first bell runs straight through it. Weigh-ins come first, then October 31, assuming everybody involved is still in the same city by Friday.
